Gate One 2005 held 19-20 May in Singapore moved forward the agenda of the inaugural event: looking at the current challenges facing airport commercial directors as they work to increase non-aeronautical revenues, examining the viability of emerging streams of revenue and debating the roles that each player airports, concessionaires and suppliers can and should play in the process. With the participation of the distinguished Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, and under the moderation of its Managing Director Peter Harbison, Gate One presented the experts and case studies of the experienced then took the debate to the floor where delegates interacted with and learnt from each other. “Airport Privatisation & the Commercial Imperative” David Pang, CEO, HKGIA/President, ACI Pacific Introduction and Overview Linda Hopkins, Conference Director “The Outlook for Airport Privatisation and Financing” Peter Harbison, Managing Director for the Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation, sets the scene for the conference with this overview of where and when privatisation will take place. “An Airport’s Perspective – Case Study” Tony Davis, CEO, Tiger Airways “Expanding Commercial Opportunities” In an airport privatisation, financiers, airport owners and retailers all approach the business venture with their own objectives and minimum expectations that come to bear on the final retail offer. In this session, airports and concessionaires discuss the key issues they look for in growing the commercial market before and after privatisation and why it requires a team effort. A financier joins the discussion, examining its role in influencing the government owner’s views of commercial revenues. The session closes with panellists opening the discussion to the audience.

Moderated by Martin Moodie, Managing Director, Moodie International “A Changing Environment” Airport profiles are changing. The liberalisation of airline market access and the concurrent entry of low cost airlines will force changes in airport retail environments. These developments — especially with such accelerated growth — create many opportunities, but they also alter traffic flows and change the nature of retail sales, both in terms of the products sold and in the way they are sold. How can airports and retailers exploit new opportunities while avoiding the pitfalls? An airport retail manager, a major retail chain, a terminal planning expert and an airport operations executive lead the discussion.

In each case, the privatisation process will be important in prompting
governments – at local and national level, depending on who owns them – to stimulate non-aeronautical revenues.
Until now, they have relied almost entirely on aero charges and head taxes. Two analysts examine these two markets, followed by a moderated discussion with the audience.
