STATE OF THE INDUSTRY
Erik Juul-Mortensen, TFWA President

Duty free and travel retail is no stranger to challenges. The current global financial crisis is a further example of how the industry has to deal with the external political and economic pressures of our times.
TFWA President Erik Juul-Mortensen gave his perspective on the situation and how industry stakeholders might approach this latest challenge... without losing sight of long-term objectives. The President also proffered his views on how and why the industry should take concrete action to “challenge the future”.

09.25 - 09.45
THE GLOBAL COUNTERFEIT CHALLENGE
Luc Chatel, French Minister for Industry & Consumer Affairs
& Bernard Brochand, Mayor of Cannes, Member of Parliament and President of the French national anti-counterfeit committee (CNAC).

The economic losses generated by the global counterfeiting business are valued at $700 billion annually. Travel retail is the most secure retail channel in the world and counterfeiting has never been, nor will it ever be a problem in our shops. Nevertheless, we suffer from lost sales just like other retail channels.
Along with representatives of eleven countries, Minister Luc Chatel & Mayor Bernard Brochand launched a major intergovernmental initiative to combat counterfeiting in Cannes on Monday 27 October. TFWA, as a global trade association of premium brands, was proud to welcome the Minister and the Mayor to discuss this growing problem and how we can work together to combat its growth.

09.45 - 10.30
FORCE INDIA
Dr Vijay Mallya, Chairman, The UB Group

With India set to take the industry by storm over the next few years, Dr Mallya, who has been at the helm of the UB Group for the last 25 years, stimulated, entertained and overwhelmed delegates with his vision for India’s increasingly important role in the duty free and travel retail industry. In a market with such a sizeable travelling population, the potential for brands and retailers looking to invest in India is colossal.
Mallya also talked about how the UB Group, owner of one the world’s largest drinks companies as well as India’s largest airline, is steaming ahead to set new benchmarks of excellence in all fields. Delegates heard first-hand from the Indian tycoon how all industry stakeholders can “challenge the future”.

10.30 - 11.10
THE FOURTH DIMENSION
Hamish Taylor, Founder, The Skills Exchange

How can brands, retailers or landlords redefine their brand proposition by focussing on the benefits to the consumer rather than the product or service?

There is a myriad of lessons to be learnt from brand experiences in other sectors where companies have innovated by challenging themselves to seek new benefits for consumers.
Hamish Taylor raised a number of challenges for the industry, including of course the current economic turmoil, and encouraged delegates to look outside their immediate environment to find solutions. He illustrated how brands, retailers and landlords can manage change - and challenges - by building on the experience from within other industries. Taylor also demonstrated how this process he has implemented with companies such as BAA, Eurostar, British Airways or Sainsbury’s Bank, can also help the duty free and travel retail industry to innovate.
