State of the industry: 25 years "By the trade for the trade"

As one of the founding members of Tax Free World Association 25 years ago, TFWA President Erik Juul-Mortensen will reflect on some of the industry and association’s achievements in the past quarter-century. He will look at global political and macro economic factors which will have a decisive influence on the shape of the industry in the years ahead, focussing in particular on current economic issues and their immediate impact. At a time when all companies are facing the challenges of change, the President will appeal to the industry's good will to continue to keep in mind the numerous causes it has generously supported over the years. He will urge the audience not to forget that while the industry may be suffering tough times, many others in developing nations will always be worse hit.

The economic perspective

Jacques Attali, President, French Reform Commission

Jacques Attali will give a sociological and economic perspective of society, human behaviour and the cyclical nature of economies and economic trends, looking at the historical pattern and projecting into the future. A shrewd economist , he will provide his perspective on the global economic downturn, how and when the situation could turn and how society will change as a result. As founder of the global microfinance organisation “Planet Finance”, helping to alleviate poverty in the poorest communities, he’ll also look at how developing nations are particularly affected in economic downturns.

An industry vision

William P.Lauder, Executive Chairman, The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.

William P. Lauder, grandson of The Estée Lauder Companies’ founder Estée Lauder will provide an inspiring message on ‘investing in people and mankind’, touching on the importance of strong motivation and collaboration with employees, particularly in tough economic times. In a special keynote interview with moderator Stephen Sackur, Mr. Lauder will offer a vision for the future of the prestige beauty industry and reflect on how duty free and travel retail will evolve over the next 25 years. Additionally, Mr. Lauder will answer questions on how The Estée Lauder Companies has adopted altruistic initiatives such as the environment and humanitarian causes into the core of the Company’s mission.

The human dimension

Bob Geldof, Humanitarian & Singer

Bob Geldof will advocate an ethical approach to business, making a case for bringing a real meaning to corporate philosophy. He will evoke global geopolitical trends and the impact on both business and the more devastating impact on populations in developing countries. He will offer a ‘bigger picture’ approach and challenge the industry delegates to act more responsibly, stressing that the responsibility does not have to lie with the corporations alone, but that individuals within every company can make a difference. In the current climate, while our industry may be hitting hard times, the least fortunate populations in developing countries are even harder hit, yet Bob Geldof will illustrate how it takes only a minimal financial effort to make a significant difference.
