Michael Barrett

Executive Officer, Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association

Michael Barrett started his career in 1995 as a journalist at European news channel Euronews in Lyon before joining the network's marketing department. Since then he has worked in both media and new media, as well as for an international NGO, specialising in fundraising, marketing and communications. 

Michael joined TFWA as Conference & Research Manager in 2006, taking on responsibility for the organisation of the TFWA World Exhibition and TFWA Asia Pacific conferences in Cannes and Singapore as well as the annual MEDFA conference and the inaugural China’s Century Conference held in Beijing in March. Following his relocation to India in July 2010, he was appointed Executive Officer for the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA), a position he continues to hold following his departure from TFWA in March 2013. 

Michael is also Director of Fairetail CRM, a marketing and research agency he set up in 2011, which provides consumer communication and data mining solutions. The company operates the consumer site travellerwishes.com.

Dermot Davitt

Travel retail publisher, editor and commentator

Dermot Davitt is an experienced editor and commentator working in the travel retail media. He joined The Moodie Report in April 2006 as Deputy Publisher and Editor of the company’s Digital Print Division, becoming Vice Chairman and Editorial Director in 2012. He left the company in April 2015 to create a new multi-media publishing, research and events business dedicated to travel retail and airport commercial revenues, details of which will be revealed at TFWA Asia Pacific Exhibition & Conference 2015.

Kapila Gohel

Kapila Gohel

Editor, Duty-Free News International

Kapila Gohel is the editor of Duty-Free News International (DFNI), the leading monthly subscription-based news publication for the global travel retail industry.

Kapila joined DFNI in 2013 as digital and deputy editor, responsible for covering the global duty-free industry and the magazine’s online counterpart DFNIonline.com. In 2014 she successfully oversaw the re-launch of DFNIonline.com.

Prior to joining DFNI, Kapila gained considerable experience as a business journalist in the financial sector at posts in London, New York, Hong Kong and Cape Town.

John Rimmer

John Rimmer

Conference, Research and Corporate Affairs Director, TFWA

John Rimmer has worked in the duty free and travel retail industry since 2000, when he joined trade journal Duty-Free News International as a reporter. Within three years he had been appointed editor of sister publication Travel Retailer International, before becoming editor of DFNI a year later. In 2006 he relocated to Paris, where he joined retailer Aelia as Deputy Director of Business Development, helping the company to develop its presence at airports beyond France. 

Four years later he returned to the UK to become Executive Director – Business Development at leading trade publisher The Moodie Report. In October 2012 John returned to Paris to join Tax Free World Association as Conference, Research and External Affairs Director, tasked with strengthening the Association’s services to its members across the world. 

John has taken part in the moderation of several industry conferences, including the Global Travel Retail Summit, The Trinity Forum, TFWA Asia Pacific Conference and TFWA China’s Century Conference.

John Sutcliffe

Travel Retail Advisor

John Sutcliffe joined Aer Rianta in 1977 after working with two American multinationals, Bechtel and Merck Inc. He went to Dubai in 1983 as part of the team that set up Dubai Duty Free and stayed on as Deputy General Manager until 1990. 

He then joined Aer Rianta International and held the position of Director and General Manager at Moscow Duty Free, which was then ARI's largest business unit. In 1992 he transferred to Bahrain as General Manager of Bahrain Duty Free. The following year he helped establish Aer Rianta International-Middle East and held the position of Managing Director until he retired in December 2010. During John’s time at ARI-ME it grew to become the largest international operator in the Middle East with a turnover just short of US$1 billion. 

John was instrumental in establishing the Middle East Duty Free Association and was elected its first President in 2001. He has spoken at a number of trade conferences including ACI Trading, The Trinity Forum, TFWA Asia Pacific Conference and MEDFA.

Charlotte Turner

Charlotte Turner

Managing Editor, Travel Retail Business

Charlotte Turner joined The Travel Retail Business in July 2011 as Senior Writer at TRB and Online Editor of TRBusiness.com. Her background includes two internships with Sheengate Publishing, writing all of its property and lifestyle magazines. 

During her first year of study at Brunel University she also worked for Bauer Media, funding her through her first degree in English Literature and Creative Writing. She also spent two years as a staff writer for FHM.com, before being appointed Deputy Editor of FHMonline.com. Prior to this she was the Assistant Editor at Frontier Magazine. 

Charlotte was appointed Managing Editor of TRB in March 2015, taking over from industry veteran Doug Newhouse.
