Rudy Giuliani

Rudy Giuliani, Former Mayor of New York City

Former Mayor of New York City

Rudolph W. Giuliani was born in 1944 in Brooklyn, New York. As the grandson of Italian immigrants, he was taught the value of a strong work ethic and a deep respect for America's ideal of equal opportunity. He attended Bishop Loughlin Memorial High School, Manhattan College, and New York University Law School.

After joining the office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Rudy Giuliani rose quickly through the ranks, becoming the Chief of the Narcotics Unit at 29.

After the inauguration of Ronald Reagan in 1981, he was named Associate Attorney General, the third highest position in the U.S. Department of Justice.

In 1983, President Reagan appointed Rudy Giuliani as the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Giuliani spearheaded successful efforts against organized crime, white-collar criminals, drug dealers and corrupt elected officials. Few U.S. Attorneys in history can match his record of 4,152 convictions with only 25 reversals.

In 1993, Rudy Giuliani was elected Mayor of the City of New York. Campaigning on the slogan “One City, One Standard”, he focused on reducing crime, reforming welfare and improving the quality of life. In 1997, he was re-elected with 57% of the vote in a city in which Democrats outnumbered Republicans five to one.

Under Mayor Giuliani's leadership, overall crime was cut by 56%, murder was cut by 66%, and New York City – once considered the crime capital of the country – became the safest large city in America according to the FBI. New York City's law enforcement strategy has become a model for other cities around the world.

On September 11 2001, the USA suffered the worst attack in its history when terrorists crashed planes into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center. Thousands of New Yorkers were killed, including hundreds of members of the city's uniformed services, who rushed to the scene to lead the heroic rescue of tens of thousands of people. Having narrowly missed being crushed when the Towers fell, Mayor Giuliani immediately began leading the recovery of the city as it faced its darkest hour, and was widely lauded for his steady hand during challenging times. He was named “Person of the Year” by TIME Magazine, knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, dubbed “Rudy the Rock” by French President Jacques Chirac, and former first lady Nancy Reagan presented him with the Ronald Reagan Presidential Freedom Award.

Limited by New York City law to two terms as mayor, Rudy Giuliani founded Giuliani Partners in January, 2002, quickly establishing the professional services firm as a leader in emergency preparedness, public safety, leadership during crises, and financial management. He is also a Partner at Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, a major international law firm with over 400 lawyers, mainly serving clients in the energy and financial service industries.

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO EXHIBITORS & VISITORS

1/ Beware of fraudulent accommodation providers
It has come to our attention that unknown third parties are calling exhibitors and visitors, supposedly on behalf of TFWA, to enquire about hotel rates or to acquire information about hotel bookings.
Please be aware that TFWA is making no such approaches to exhibitors and visitors on this issue and we strongly recommend that you exercise extreme caution should you be contacted in this way.

Who are they?
Show participants have reported falling victim to fraudulent accommodation providers using names such as
Corporate Booking Services - CBS International, Global Housing Services, Corp., Gold Exhibitions, EU Convention Bureau, stareventz.net, Concierge Plus Group, Global Living Group, The Ultimate Living Group, Riviera Network, Business travel International, Expo Travel Group, Splendor Global, Universal Shows, Universal Events, Premier Destinations, Euro-Events, Biz Trade Shows, Go Fair Ltd, World Expo Plus, Expo Pros, Euro Concierge Net, Capital Exhibitions, Originata Events or Euro Events Expo (this is not an exhaustive list).

How can you avoid these frauds?
Before making any commitment with an unknown accommodation provider, we recommend that you:
- Check thoroughly all documentation from the provider. In France, all property rental and travel agencies must be licensed and hold a bank guarantee and civil liability insurance. These details must appear on all company documentation including the website.
- Be wary of our logos on accommodation providers’ websites. The TFWA name and event titles are sometimes used unlawfully.
- Book through our exclusive hotel booking platform where you can benefit from special hotel rates.

How do the frauds work?
- A fraudulent venture repeatedly emails our show participants with accommodation offers for the event.
- Their website and/or emails feature our show name and logos, creating an impression of authenticity.
- They promote attractive deals with local accommodation providers.
- Once payment has been received, the ‘company’ generally disappears and can no longer be contacted.
Please also note that bookings made through the official hotel reservation platform are absolutely secure.

2/ Beware of the fraudulent listing services "Expo guide" and "International Fairs Directory"
We would also like to warn exhibitors, should they be contacted by companies named "Expo Guide" or "International Fairs Directory", that they are online listing services and are in no way affiliated with TFWA or its official exhibition guide. The use of our association name and show name by these companies has been made without our authorization. We therefore urge exhibitors to be cautious and encourage them to contact us when receiving these types of solicitations from unfamiliar sources.
