Integrated Marketing Communications Director, Hanwha Galleria Timeworld Co. Ltd

Hyunah Ahn is responsible for the global marketing communication at one of South Korea’s leading downtown duty free retailers, Hanwha Galleria, part of the Hanwha Group. She leads the Galleria Duty Free team in initiating, developing and executing brand, digital and customer strategies, with responsibility for the retailer’s CRM and VIP programmes among others.

A graduate of Columbia University in New York, Hyunah began her career in the US with Merrill Lynch, before returning to Seoul as a senior IR consultant with Thomson Financial Corporate Group. She joined the Hanwha Group in 2011, initially as Deputy Senior Manager with the company’s Hancomm affiliate (later acquired by Doosan) before joining the group’s Management & Planning HQ. Hyunah was appointed to the Hanwha Galleria Timeworld retail business last year.

Hanwha operates a total of five Galleria Department Stores in Korea: in Seoul, Suwon, Cheonan, Daejeon and Jinju. The company recently opened a new duty free store in the “63 Building” in downtown Seoul, and also operates a Galleria Duty Free store at Jeju International Airport.

Sarah Branquinho

President ETRC & Business Relations & External Affairs Director, Dufry

Sarah Branquinho is an active advocate for the duty-free and travel retail industry, and the key dual role it plays in enhancing transport infrastructure and the passenger experience.  She is President of the European Travel Retail Confederation, the representative organisation for the duty free and travel retail industry in Europe, Chair of the UK Travel Retail Forum and a member of the Board of the Duty Free World Council. Sarah was also recently elected to the ACI World Business Partners Advisory Board.

With thirty years experience in the duty free industry at TFWA, then managing the consumer mobilisation programme and the ambitious research projects which underpinned the lobby to save intra-EU duty free, Sarah joined BAA and its retail company World Duty Free where her remit for business relationships and external affairs grew with the company.  

With World Duty Free's recent acquisition by Dufry AG, the overall business now accounts for one in every four travel retail sales worldwide.

Uli Chan is a BA (Hons) Fashion Media graduate from LASALLE College of The Arts – Goldsmiths, class of 2016. A creative thinker with a sentimental soul, she writes a fashion blog entitled ULIMALI inspired by her love for dark music, vintage aesthetics and oddities. In 2015 the blog won Best Fashion Blog under the annual Singapore Blog Awards presented by Singapore Press Holdings. 

Occasionally, Uli takes on creative roles as a makeup artist, model and photographer. She is based in Singapore and counts thousands of followers on social media.

Kevin Chiang

President, Ever Rich Corporation

Having dedicated the past 10 years to the development of Ever Rich Corporation’s duty free business, Kevin Chiang began his career at a junior level working at Taipei’s international airport, later becoming head of the retailer’s marketing department. 

Kevin successfully led the transformation of Ever Rich’s duty free business, through the construction of new stores and the launch of Taiwan’s first duty free commercial website. His experience with Ever Rich spans the spectrum of sales, marketing, service and retail. 

There are about 7,000 employees in Ever Rich Corporation, and all actively participate in social community work, with more than 150 charity activities organised in the past year alone. Under Kevin’s leadership, Ever Rich’s corporate social responsibility work has been recognised with GRI 3.1 and AA1000AS international standards, and the retailer has won many awards for its community activities.

Christabel Chua is one of Singapore’s most popular digital personalities. Born in Singapore and a university student in Perth, Australia, Christabel’s digital career has seen her travel the world; she has appeared in a number of high-profile magazines and has participated in campaigns for both entry-level luxury and commercial brands. More than simply a “digital influencer”, she often assists with creating copy for campaigns and storyboards for videos.

Christabel has recently worked on commercials for VISA, Canon and Mediacorp Channel 5. She has also hosted travel videos for Changi Airport Singapore and starred in Chinese dramas on local television networks.

The name of Christabel’s blog, BellyWellyJelly, stems from her nickname Bel. It includes fashion and trend reporting, travel writing and reports on local designers. The blog has attracted thousands of followers in Singapore and beyond, earning Christabel a nomination as “Breakout Star of 2015” at Singapore’s Social Media Awards.

He was previously Deputy Vice President, Strategy and Innovations for Lagardère Services at its head office in Paris, and also Director of Marketing and Merchandising at LS travel retail Asia Pacific in Sydney. Now based in Singapore, Grant has over 15 years’ experience in travel retail and more than 20 within Retail and Foodservice, spanning roles within Key Operations, Marketing, Retail Concept and Design.

Andrew Gardiner is a retail industry expert with over 35 years of experience in Australia and abroad. He has spent eight years in the travel retail business, as Managing Director at DFS Galleria Australia, General Manager of Retail at Sydney Airport and now Chief of Retail and Launceston airport at APAC.

Andrew is a past Chairman of the Australian Duty Free Association and serves on the boards of the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association and Launceston Airport.

Outside work Andrew is an avid sports fan, playing golf, following rugby and coaching soccer. He is a long-term supporter of the Starlight Children’s Foundation.

Erik Juul-Mortensen

President, Tax Free World Association

A founding member of TFWA and a member of its Management Committee since the inception of the Association, Erik Juul-Mortensen served as Vice President from 1986 to 1997, before being elected President in September 1999.

From 1987 to 1991 Erik was Vice President at Danish Distillers Ltd, in charge of the export and duty free division. In 1991 his promotion to Senior Vice President and Export Director followed, and in 1996 he was named Senior Vice President and International Director.

Following the acquisition of Danish Distillers by Stockholm-based V&S Group in December 1999, Erik transferred to V&S International Brands as Senior Vice President and Commercial Director. In 2003 he was promoted to President of V&S Absolut Global Duty Free, with responsibility for the entire V&S portfolio in the global duty free market. In the same period he also served as Managing Director of V&S Deutschland, the German domestic market subsidiary of V&S Group. From 2005 to 2010 Erik served as President of Maxxium Global Travel Retail, a highly successful division of Maxxium Worldwide which was a joint venture between V&S Group, Remy-Cointreau, The Edrington Group and Beam Global Spirits & Wine. 

In addition to his responsibilities at TFWA, Erik is also Treasurer of the Duty Free World Council, a member of the Supervisory and Managing Boards of the European Travel Retail Confederation and a board member of the Middle East & Africa Duty Free Association and the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association.

In the field of tourism, Cheryl has conducted substantial research on Asian millennial and business travellers, as well as on talent development solutions for the industry.

Jack MacGowan was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Aer Rianta International in August 2011, having previously held the role of Chief Commercial Officer at airport authority DAA, with responsibility for all commercial operations in Ireland including retail, car parks, marketing and property concessions. Prior to joining DAA in 2005, Jack worked with Tesco, first as Head of Marketing for Tesco Ireland and later as Non-Food Marketing Director in the UK. 

An engineer by profession, Jack’s other career roles include marketing and general management positions at Diageo in the UK, USA, Russia and Greece and a period in the London office of business consultants, McKinsey & Company. He holds an MBA from Wharton University.

Kishore Mahbubani

Dean, Professor in the Practice of Public Policy, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

One of Asia’s most respected diplomats, Kishore Mahbubani was with the Singapore Foreign Service for 33 years (1971-2004), serving, among other senior positions, as Singapore’s Ambassador to the UN. Currently, he is Dean of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore.

He writes extensively on public policy issues. Among his major recent books are The Great Convergence: Asia, the West and the Logic of One World (selected by Financial Times as one of the best books of 2013), Can Asians Think?, Beyond The Age Of Innocence, The New Asian Hemisphere, and Can Singapore Survive?

He was listed as one of the top 100 public intellectuals in the world by Foreign Policy and Prospect magazines in 2005, and named one of Foreign Policy’s Top Global Thinkers in 2010 and 2011. Most recently, he was selected by Prospect magazine as one of the top 50 world thinkers for 2014.

Dr Peter Mohn graduated as a psychologist and earned a PhD in Business Psychology at the University of Göttingen, Germany. Peter is of Norwegian origin but has lived in Denmark, Belgium, Finland and Germany before finally settling in Switzerland in 2002. He has worked for various leading global market research agencies since 1993 and has specialized in travel retail research since 2004. The company he co-founded, m1nd-set, works as a consultant to over 30 global brands as well as many leading shop operators in duty free & travel retail. m1nd-set is also the research partner of various travel retail associations and media.

Based at Lake Geneva, m1nd-set conducts consumer research at airports, at border shops and onboard ferries worldwide to deliver marketing intelligence, actionable insights and consulting. Over the last years, m1nd-set has conducted over a million interviews with travellers around the world. The company conducts state-of-the-art quantitative and qualitative research on many different themes, such as shopping motivation & behaviour, brand awareness and evaluation, price elasticity, promotion effectiveness, category management, path to purchase, product pre- and post-testing, segmentation surveys, mystery shopping and many more.

Frank O’Connell

Frank O’Connell, President,  Duty Free World Council

President,  Duty Free World Council

Frank O’Connell retired as Director Retail, Dublin Airport Authority in 2008 and now handles European Retail Affairs for the DAA (Dublin Airport Authority) on a consultancy basis. He was elected President of the Duty Free World Council in March 2014.

He holds a Masters degree in Business Administration from the University of Stirling, is a graduate of the Marketing Institute of Ireland and holds an MA degree from Dublin City University. 

Frank has over 15 years of experience in the advertising business, having held several Art and Creative Director positions before joining Aer Rianta in 1979. During his time at Aer Rianta/DAA he filled the role of Corporate Marketing Manager and General Manager Trading before taking up the role of Director Retail, with responsibility for all retailing and food and beverage activities at the three Irish airports of Dublin, Cork and Shannon. 

Frank served as Commercial Director at Dusseldorf Airport between 1998 and 2000 and recently retired as a member of the Supervisory Board of Flughafen Düsseldorf GmbH, having served nine years on the board.  

He is Vice-President of the Paris-based European Travel Retail Confederation (ETRC), is co-author of the book European Airport Retailing, Growth Strategies for the next Millennium and has written extensively on airport retailing. 

He is a member of the board of Hope, the charity serving street children in Calcutta and is Chairman of the board of Crosscare, the social care agency of the Archdiocese of Dublin.

Philippe Schaus

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, DFS Group

Philippe Schaus is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DFS Group, and a member of the LVMH Executive Committee.  He joined DFS in 2011 as Group President, Merchandising and Marketing, and was appointed to his current role in 2012.  

Philippe began his career in 1987 as Assistant Treasurer at JP Morgan & Co in Brussels. In 1990 he moved to The Boston Consulting Group as a Senior Consultant. In 1992 Philippe was named International Commercial Director of the German Porcelain Tableware Division at Villeroy & Boch, and was appointed Managing Director of that division in 1999.

In 2003, Philippe joined Louis Vuitton, part of the LVMH Group, as President of the Europe Zone. He was appointed Senior Vice President International in 2006 and became Executive Vice President in 2009. 

Philippe graduated in 1987 from The University of Liège, Belgium, as an aerospace engineer and received an MBA from INSEAD, Fontainebleau, in 1990. 

Born in Luxembourg and married with four children, Philippe speaks French, English, Spanish and German.

Jaya Singh

A passionate believer in the potential of the global travel retail business, Jaya Singh is currently the Region Director for the Middle East, Indian Sub-Continent, Asia Pacific and Oceania World Travel Retail business at leading confectionery company Mondelez International. Since 2013 he has served as the President for the Asia Pacific Travel Retail Association (APTRA). 

Jaya has experience in almost every region of the world, in both domestic and travel retail environments. He previously served as Global Sales Director for Kraft Foods World Travel Retail business, as it was formerly known, and was also the Director for the Kraft Foods European Export business. 

Prior to this Jaya ran his own business which focused on training and personal development. He is a firm believer that the potential success of any organization and the realization of opportunities lies in identifying, developing and unleashing the potential of people in the commercial environments in which they operate. Carrying this credo from business to other domains, Jaya does a lot of private work in his spare time helping people identify, release and realize their own potential.

For Laurens, “travel” and “retail” have always been connected. He is inspired by the new promises technology brings, acting as an insighteer for the companies he works for in the travel ecosystem.

His passion for research and exploring new techniques to understand consumer behaviour came alive when joining GfK, one of the world’s leading market research companies. In various positions with GfK Laurens has developed fact-based innovative solutions in markets such as the media and entertainment industry, publishing and fashion markets with the objective to create innovative industry currencies. 

Laurens can scale down complexity towards core take-aways, powered by the wealth of knowledge generated by a global research firm operating in more than 100 countries. He has spoken at several conferences across the world.

Laurens studied at the Breda University of applied sciences in the Netherlands, and was awarded a BSc in retail marketing. He now lives and works in Singapore.

Amos Xu is currently the Deputy General Manager and Investment & Procurement Director of Haikou Meilan Airport Duty Free Shop, and has abundant experience in innovation, operation management and market development of tourism and duty free enterprises on Hainan Island. In 2016 Amos will be closely involved in the establishment of three major duty free projects in Hainan, to further expand the size and impact of offshore duty free shops and assist in the construction of Hainan International Tourism Island.

From 2011 to 2014, Amos worked at Seaview International Plaza, a high-end shopping centre operated by HNA Group, and was responsible for human resource management, brand investment and operations. In this role he became familiar with the standards of international brands and sophisticated retail management techniques. 

Amos joined Haikou Meilan Airport Duty Free Shop as Assistant General Manager in 2015, taking on responsibility for the Logistics and Comprehensive Management Departments successively before being appointed Director of the Investment & Procurement Department.

This year Amos and his team will establish new duty free shops in Haikou MOVA Plaza, Haikou Aviation Tourism Duty Free Plaza and Sanya Airline Tourism Duty Free City, ushering in a new era for the Hainan offshore duty free industry.
