Celebrating 70 years of duty free

07/04/2017 TFWA will be marking the anniversary with a new project to be announced this summer, and will also be contributing to a number of other industry initiatives now under way.

Many TFWA members will already be aware that 2017 marks an important anniversary for the duty free industry: it is 70 years since a visionary Irishman, Dr Brendan O’Regan, saw the potential in selling goods free of duty to the US servicemen and other international travellers transiting through the airport of Shannon, in the west of Ireland. Thanks to Dr O’Regan and other pioneers, a global retail business now worth over $60 billion was born. TFWA will be marking the anniversary with a new project to be announced this summer, and will also be contributing to a number of other industry initiatives now under way. And we look forward to seeing our members and partners at the industry’s global summit meeting in Cannes in October to celebrate duty free’s first 70 years.
