Tuesday
Low cost, high potential?
Chris Tarry, Senior Associate, Nyras Capital.
Moderator: Doug Newhouse, Editor, The Travel Retail Business
Low cost airlines may not claim to be the "world's favourite airline" as some carriers do, but it's certainly likely that, as a business segment, they're set to become the world's most influential. LCC's have not only changed the way people fly, they're also having an impact on the way the other stakeholders in the duty free and travel retail industry are rethinking their business models. Legacy carriers are launching low cost pricing policies and airports are introducing dedicated budget terminals to cater to the low cost passenger. But does low cost necessarily mean low spend? Aviation specialist Chris Tarry discussed the growing influence of the LCC business sector, what the impact will be on inflight spending, passenger profiles and future business models and what opportunities there may be for the duty free and travel retail industry.

The trade associations from around the world will meet to discuss the critical issues either affecting or likely to affect the duty free and travel retail industry.
Chair : Michael Payne, Executive Director, IAADFS
Frank O'Connell, President, ETRC
Among the issues tabled during the meeting: the WHO threat to tobacco sales in duty free and individual governmental initiatives looking to block or restrict duty free tobacco sales. The "one bag" rule, of increasing concern for the industry in Europe, could well spread to other regions. The workshop will provide an overview of the real and potential impact to the business as low cost airlines set about introducing restrictive measures for carry-on baggage, which will inevitably affect airport retail. All industry associations will be invited to address some of the other global and regional issues in this interactive workshop. The discussion and debate will aim to produce potential solutions and ways forward for the industry to protect its interests.
Please note that this workshop is open to all registered visitors and exhibitors only. A short review will be presented to the media as early as possible after the event.
