Long before the crisis caused by the covid-19 pandemic, awareness of environmental issues had become a significant issue for travellers and shoppers around the world. Concerns over sustainability are increasingly at the heart of travel and purchase decisions, and many believe the trend will accelerate once the covid-19 crisis eases.

For the latest major study within the TFWA Insight series of consumer reports, TFWA was keen to explore the importance of sustainability for travelling consumers today, and also to canvas the thoughts of industry stakeholders with regard to the benefits and challenges to creating a viable and meaningful sustainability strategy. The result is the TFWA Insight: Sustainability in Travel Retail Study 2020, an in-depth report conducted and compiled by Pi Insight, featuring extensive insights and data from consumers, brands, retailers, airports and other companies.

The study, in PDF format, is available in two parts: the full report, plus a concise executive summary. Among the questions and issues addressed are:

  • The importance of sustainability for consumers, in domestic and travel retail
  • Evolution of perceptions over time
  • Factors influencing purchase and product choice
  • Travel retail approaches to questions of sustainability, and examples of current practice
  • Communication challenges

We hope the Sustainability in Travel Retail Study will help to generate debate around this vital issue, and that TFWA members will find it useful and informative.

As always, the report is available free of charge to TFWA members; simply log in to download the files.
