Bodegas Protos

Protos was founded in 1927, when 11 viticulturists with a common dream of elaborating fine bottled wines in this forgotten wine region with great potential. Protos was originally named Bodega Ribera Duero de Peñafiel, with Protos being and still is its brand name. 55 years later, Bodegas Protos ceded altruistically the use of the name Ribera Duero for the use of the newly created Ribera del Duero Denomination of Origin. The name Protos comes from the Greek word Proto, meaning first, origin, essence, and is true as it was the first winery in the Ribera del Duero. Nowadays, Protos is present in over 100 countries and elaborates wines in three appellations, Ribera del Duero, Rueda and Cigales.
